Heart Disease, everything you need to know!

Don't miss the chance to hear from Professor Anthony Zulli, Ms Laura Gadanec, Dr Deepak Haikerwal, Ms Mitra Zarrati and Mr Nicholas Ruhl at our upcoming Heart Disease Information session. This event will be packed with informative and insightful talks from these leading health experts in the fields of Cardiovascular disease, immunology, nutrition, and clinical research. They will discuss their latest findings and share some practical tips on how to prevent and manage heart disease, including the role of exercise, dietary polyphenols, and other interventions in preventing or treating the disease.

Dr Anthony Zulli is an Associate Professor at Victoria University, and Heads the Bone, Muscle & Cardiovascular Group with Dr Levinger at the Institute for Health and Sport.  He gained his PhD from University of Melbourne in 2002 and his work on heart disease over the last 20 years has identified the importance of a healthy diverse diet on preventing heart disease.  Anthony will discuss the importance of specific food types which will help reduce heart disease.

Miss Laura Kate Gadanec is a PhD student and animal technician at the Institute for Health and Sport, Victoria University. Laura is a recipient of Victoria University’s Research Training Program Scholarship, and her research focuses on using pharmaceutical and natural products to target different components and pathways of the immune system and inflammatory process to treat cardiovascular disease and its associated risk factors. In this session Laura will introduce cardiovascular disease, explain its progression, and will discuss current treatment, management and prevention options, as well as highlighting latest research developments. 

Dr Deepak Haikerwal Bsc, MBBs, FRACP, FCSANZ, DDU, PhD is a director at HeartWest and is a Consultant Cardiologist. Deepak was the inaugural Director of Cardiology at Sunshine Hospital before it was re-merged with Western Health, and held many senior positions within Western Health. He has also been actively involved at The Alfred Hospital, Cabrini Hospital and Western Private Hospital, as well as holding admitting rights to The Avenue and Epworth Hospital. Deepak has been with Heartwest since its beginning and has been proud to see the growth in this important service. He has also been a driving force in setting up private inpatient cardiology services at Western Private – which is now a significant provider of inpatient cardiology care in the West. He is a cardiologist interested in all aspects of clinical cardiology care. He is involved in consultations, performs coronary angiograms, transoesophageal echocardiograms (TOE), reports on transthoracic echocardiograms, is involved in teaching and training medical students, residents and registrars. He also continues to participate in research projects. Deepak is passionate in the provision of high quality cardiology care in the western and north western suburbs of Melbourne. He feels that it is tribute to the success of Heartwest has contributed to more specialists providing services in what is an under serviced area of Melbourne, and that it is a tribute to Heartwest that other specialists try to emulate the ethos and service of Heartwest. Deepak attends Western Health, Alfred Hospital, Western Private Hospital, Cabrini, Epworth and consults at Williamstown, St Albans, Hoppers Crossing, Sunbury and Roxbrugh Park.

Ms Mitra Zarrati PhD is a highly skilled dietician at HeartWest with over 15 years of experience in diet therapy and assesses clients’ nutritional needs, medical tests, and medical history to provide tailored nutritional advice to suit their specific requirements. As an Assistant Professor overseas, she has been recognized as a Global Distinguished Talent by the Department of Home Affairs of Australia for her significant contributions to the Australian research community. In 2022 she migrated to Australia. Her research activities in various fields of nutrition sciences and diseases have helped her develop a comprehensive clinical approach. She is as a Sessional Academic in Victoria University in Melbourne. Her clinical approach is based on a holistic and patient-centered approach to achieve a fruitful outcome. She is proficient in English and Farsi.

Nick is an Accredited Exercise Physiologist at Kieser Australia, who enjoys working with chronic health conditions. Nick has a particular passion for working with Diabetes, Osteoporosis, Fibromyalgia, and cancer patients, as well as overall body health and performance. Outside of work you can find Nicholaos completing strength and conditioning coach in the Victorian Amateur Football League or spending time with the family.
